Nike’s Air Max cushioning has evolved in numerous ways since first being introduced in the 1980s. In 2024, this game-changing technology took another leap forwards with the Air Max Dn, whose unique take on visible Air gives a completely new feeling the brand has called “dynamic motion”.

The centerpiece of the Nike Air Max Dn is its tubular cushioning, which consists of two chambers filled with pressurized air. Each chamber is made up of two interconnected cylinders, with the rear chamber set to a firm pressure of 15psi and the one in front much softer at 5psi. This delivers a bespoke experience as it allows the air inside to move freely between each tube, reacting to individual traits like weight and gait and creating a smooth transition from heel to toe. The structure of this so-called Dynamic Air unit was rigorously tested using data from athletes to ensure durability and effectiveness over long distances.

The rest of the midsole is made from Phylon foam, which provides soft impact protection along the whole of the foot. More stability and support comes from the exaggerated TPU midfoot shank, while the durable rubber outsole features Waffle-style grip pads for excellent traction. Translucent rubber runs through the center of the outsole and circular nodules mark the location of the Dynamic Air.

The energetic motion produced by the Air Max Dn’s sole is reflected in the sleek design of its upper. It incorporates a lightweight multilayered mesh made from durable textiles combined in such a way as to provide outstanding breathability. Silicone elements cover the outer, giving it a distinctive look and an intriguing tactile quality. Meanwhile, an oval-shaped TPU heel counter protects the Achilles and plush padding on the heel and tongue enhances comfort.

Esthetically, the Nike Air Max Dn looks like a sneaker of the future. Its large shank cuts dynamically across the midfoot, and the bulging external heel counter acts as a bold accent against the scale-like textures of the upper. The Air Max Dn logo gives a stylish nod to heritage Nike branding on the tongue, heel and insole, while the use of Swooshes is subtle, with small versions on the shank and outsole. The four circular windows revealing the Dynamic Air cushioning, one of which displays a Dn Air logo, pay homage to the brand’s early-2000s tubular systems for a retro touch.
